Despite his recent divorce and being new to the valley, the career of Malcolm Cromarty, D.V.M., was finally settling into a routine. After all, life among cows, stoic dairy farmers, and a steadfast dog tends to be rather mundane, especially when bolstered by an occasional 'wee dram' of single malt. However, the daily grind veers off course with the arrival of a disease outbreak that seemingly doesn’t stay on message with the textbooks. To cope with this challenge, Malcolm must rely on a patchwork of inhabitants to guide him through the peculiar culture in which he lives. The problem is, while some of the locals are helpful, others have their own motives, engage only within their limits of religious dogma, or are outright hostile. With each passing day, Malcolm stumbles deeper into a community that holds science, change, and outsiders under a high degree of suspicion, and a family feud with a dark and malevolent past. Hardly a promising path to resolve the outbreak and avoid tragic consequences.

If you like James Heriot's descriptions of a country vet's experiences and Stephen King's suspenseful mysteries, you'll love this novel. Dr. Erskine relates engaging anecdotes of a large animal veterinarian's work among the Amish farmers in western Pennsylvania, based on his own early years in practice in that locale. But he adds suspense that builds, a public health mystery, and a little romance to Dr. Malcolm Cromarty's life as the young Tierarzt in a busy country vet practice. An engaging plot, interesting characters, and lovely descriptions make for a thoroughly enjoyable read.Product details

Casting Demons Into Swine Ronald Erskine Books Reviews
Really interesting ready. I truly enjoyed reading it.
A fun vacation read. A nice first effort for RJ Erskine. Looking forward to the sequel!
It might have been a good book without the sex and profanity. Not sure why author thought he needed to add that in. Sad and unprofessional.
A very engaging story. The author masterfully creates vivid images in the readers mind. This is a book that you can't help but plow through, bummed that you have reached the end, hopeful there is more to come soon.
As a veterinarian myself, I really enjoyed this book! The mystery was compelling and well.written. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good read.
A very good read, and I look forward to further installments. Set among engaging Amish and non-Amish backwoods characters, an 'outsider' large animal veterinarian tries to stem a possible rabies epidemic.
This book, while fiction has all of the details exactly right, be it the nature of how things go in the Amish community to the nuances of an ancient and feared disease lurking in the countryside. The author has captured much of what life as a veterinarian serving all species is really like. It is done in a most enjoyable style and very engaging, making it hard to put down the book once started. You will enjoy the dynamic of relationships and challenges of integrating today's concepts of veterinary care into some segments of society that are not necessarily interested in modernizing, either by choice or by circumstance of geography.
