Silent Samaritan James Tucker 9781479162628 Books Reviews

This book is a real page turner , thrill and excitement on every page of the book. Sometimes we just end up somewhere at the wrong time as did Kensey, the girl who worked at a hospital. Shooting victims that came in the ER one night started the nightmare for her. Thru times of stress and horror she struggles thru her daily life. Who can she trust, who wants her dead ? Did we put our faith in the wrong man ? Find out in the end. Poor Kensey really went thru alot trying to do the right thing by the victim who she thought was surely going to die that night .
I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning reading this book; it grabbed my attention and kept me hooked. There are many twists and turns, a few predictable events, but it moves quickly. A review on called it "a made for tv story" and I have to agree. It would adapt well to a script, maybe on the Lifetime or USA cable networks. In fact, parts of the story felt very familiar, as if I'd read the book before but I think that was due to the fact that I read (and watch) so many mysteries that it's hard to find something that doesn't feel familiar. There were some implausibilities, especially the method Kensey chooses to keep herself safe from the killers and their boss. I can't say more without giving away something central to the story but it's an old plot device that badly needs updating.

Kensey starts out by trying to do the right thing but naturally, events go awry and her good intentions lead her deeper and and deeper into a complicated situation. She is sometimes impulsive and soon she finds herself making questionable decisions, decisions that make the reader think about what they would do in a similar situation. I disagreed with some and if she weren't likable (and, you know, the story fictitious) I might have had stronger averse reaction. Tucker definitely hit the target there, and it adds a layer of depth to what could be just another mystery.

It's not a perfect story but it is a good way to spend several hours.

I received a PDF for review.
I read Silent Samaritan on a train, in a car, at the laundromat--in other words, once you pick up this book, the fast-paced plot keeps you turning pages until you finish. The plot revolves around two main characters Manny Romero, whose botched hit man role lands him in the ER of a big hospital, and Dr. Kensey Shaw, the ER doctor who first tends to him.

Manny wants to make amends to God by asking Kensey to warn the two other people he and his partner are assigned to kill that they're in danger. This forms the premise of one of those action-crammed plots designed to entertain as our heroine tries to do Manny's bidding. Kensey ends up hiding in basements, dropping out of windows, dodging bullets, putting her best friend in harm's way, witnessing murders, burying bodies, making friends with hookers, and running like hell. At the same time, our sympathy for her builds, because she's a lowly female medical resident being supervised by a posturing, leering chief resident.

Manny is also a nicely conflicted character. An undercover cop who gets lured into a life of crime, his near-death experience makes him feel conflicted about his choices and newly, fervently religious. The scenes where he and Kensey are confiding in one another, building trust, and suspicious of each other at the same time, are among the best in the book--even tender at times.

I also found much to admire about the writing. The author, James Tucker, is a physician, so the medical scenes have a feeling of "been there, done that." Some of his descriptions really sing, too, like a church filled with "dusty silence" and a hospital waiting room with a sofa and chairs "picked out of a catalog by someone who never intended to sit on them." That kind of writing puts this book a notch above the standard thriller.

My only quibble is with one main plot point. I don't want to spoil it for readers, so I won't let on what it is. Let's just say that Kensey is supposedly safeguarding her life with an object that will keep Manny's partner and boss from killing her. The problem is that the object is a dinosaur in this age of high-tech information. This wouldn't be how a clever ER doctor would keep it. Also, Kensey makes some questionable moral decisions that made her a much less sympathetic character than she could have been. The ending of the book also seemed pretty unbelievable and a bit rushed.

Beyond that, though, this book is a satisfying big gulp of a thriller that kept me guessing. Is the real villain Kensey's new heartthrob, the aptly named Alec Fortune? Is it the captain of the police force? The handsome detective investigating the case? The clues are all here and nicely laid out from the start, with tension that won't let up until you finish the book.
I have read all of James Tucker's book. And have enjoyed them all. I hope he writes another one. He is my kids Doctor and I can't wait until they are old enough to read them
this is a pretty good whodunnit mystery book for a part time novelist who happens to be a full time pediatrician
